ABSTRACT
The phenomenon of diasporas is becoming an increasingly resonant topic in political sciences. With states becomig more porous transnationalism is said to influence domestic and foreign policy development of their respective “motherlands“, also known as “mother countries“ or “homelands“. The objective of this study is to characterize the role of the Armenian diaspora in the process of building Armenia as an independent state. The paper seeks to answer the question concerning the nature and the role of the Armenian diaspora
in the formation of independent Armenia. The key argument this article wishes to make is that understanding of state building process of modern Armenia after gaining the indepedence needs to feature insights into both the armenian state and its sizeable and powerful diaspora. As such, the study sheds light on the relationship between the diaspora and the motherland within political, social and economic fields. The result is an innovated view of the issue of diasporas based on the prism of instrumentalization of the host countries. An alternative approach to examining the relationship between the diaspora and its motherlands is ethnographic research, based on primary data and the use of socio-psychological and constructivist literature, concerned with maintaining collective identity under the pressure of transnationalism. The potential application of the analysis of the relationship between the diaspora and the state as a composite system can be applied to the Jewish and Greek diasporas.
