ABSTRACT

The author analyses the development stages of political parties stemming from the theory of cleavages that has itsjustification especially in the European traditions. The perception of fundamental and long-lasting problems has split the society on the basis of ideological and value orientation. Afterwards, the theory of cleavages was further enriched consequently to the transformation of Eastern European states. At the same time, the author distinguishes between six types of political parties in regard to historical development. This classification reflects itself in the internal organisational structures of the parties and their functioning as institutions. The aim of the article is to point out to the transformation process of political parties and their classification. The author does not perceive their transformation as a game or failure of individuals and groups, but rather as the objective eternally changing process. In regard to the contemporary trends he concludes that the political sciences face the challenge to analyse objectively the increasing influence of the so called non-standard political parties.
