ABSTRACT

Where does the growth of Chinese power lead to? Although this question has been raised quite often, the debate remains inconclusive. For one, it is labeled as classical revisionist state. If they are correct, we have there is good reason to belive, that peace and stability in East Asia are under threat. For other, however, China is typical status quo power. If they are right, we do not have to be afraid of the future. Or, some might say, China is somewhere between these two categories. Inconclusive debate is partly problem of the generally accepted definition of revisionism/status quo power. In order to move the ongoing debate further, we have decided to focus purely on realist perspective and military power (military expenditures, strategy, relations with the dominant power – United States). The article aims to answer the question whether China can be regarded as a revisionist power. None of the analyzed items give us clear-cut answers. We came to conclusion that China is not typical revisionist state, but rather unsatisfied. China has its ambitions and wants to increase its influence in the region, however it does not necessary make it predatory state that would seek to change the rules of the game.
