ABSTRACT

This paper presents a spatial analysis of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) voter support in the 2006, 2010, and 2013 Czech parliamentary elections. The main method applied for classifying electoral results was the spatial autocorrelation and spatial regression which play an important role in spatial statistics and spatial econometrics. The result of the analysis showed that regional stability of the KSČM support is very stable and is “rooted” in certain regions, which are almost identical through the whole period since Czech transition to democracy in 1990. In these areas, therefore, we can assume the existence of intergenerational transmission of the party identification, or mobilization of young voters. An important characteristic of these regions is also the fact, that they are affected by structural problems. Overall, there is a gradual increase in the influence of economic variables for the KSČM support. Successful environment for the KSČM support are especially the units that are characterized by a higher unemployment, lower educational level, lower proportion of entrepreneurs and small number of foreigners living there, i.e. characteristics that in socio-economic, or socio-ecological terms define the peripheral areas.
